How do I store makeup properly ?

Over time, you tend to accumulate accessories and makeup products. You can buy a lipstick, a sun powder, a kohl pencil or lip contour, or a palette of eye shadows depending on the season and mood. Our kits and drawers end up overflowing with products, sometimes bought for an evening and never handed over. It is the same for a brush, sponge and other materials that we do not always find, because stored randomly from a free space. We end up no longer really knowing what we have and … buying back! Back to school means tidying up for a fresh start. With this article, we propose you to help you understand how to properly store your makeup. Ready? Here we go!

Gather and sort your makeup

Before moving to storage, it is essential to take stock of our treasures. To do this, we start by grouping all our makeup products in one place. Many of us at have makeup everywhere: in a handbag, one or more kits, a vanity in the bathroom, in the furniture in the entrance for touch-ups, or in the bedroom. So we take a basket and go hunting. Once all the products are grouped together, we can proceed to the sorting step.

Store makeup properly

In this more or less important batch of products, not all are good to keep. Some cosmetics may be out of date or have simply aged badly (lipsticks with a suspicious odor, oily foundations or dried mascaras). Then we sort by four major axes:

  1. What you throw away- it’s no secret, like all consumer products or drugs, cosmetics have a cut-off date. Outdated makeup can cause you some inconvenience or cause imperfections such as redness, irritation or a rash. To avoid this, all products that are suspicious or whose DLC is exceeded are discarded. There is often a statement on the container that indicates the duration of use. If this is not the case, the odour or texture can be relied upon.
  2. What we offer: Sometimes you buy a product for a particular event and then you don’t need it anymore. Similarly, we can go wrong and buy a lipstick whose shade does not suit us particularly well, an eyeshadow with the texture that we dislike, a BB cream that does not suit our skin type, or simply having a duplicate product and knowing that it will not be used in its allotted time. In this case, rather than throwing away, these products can make a sister, cousin or friend happy. If the products are still in their packaging, it is also possible to give them to an association.
  3. What we keep: This point is unique to each of us. It is here to keep the essentials of our makeup routine. For some, just a few products (complexion powder, eyebrow pencil, concealer, corrector and mascaras) for others, the list can be significantly longer: foundation, highlighter (illuminator), eyeshadow palettes, gloss, lip lacquers, etc.). It’s up to you to define what you really use and build your makeup kit according to it.
  4. What we store: We reserve everything that is not started and that can be used once our current products are finished. We can afford to keep some makeup on in case it comes in handy. On the other hand, one avoids opening several identical products at the same time in order to be able to give if one finds that one does not use it in the end.

Find the right place and storage system

Now that the supply of makeup products is drastically reduced, you have to agree on the right place to store it. To do this, we have to ask THE question: «where do I usually wear makeup?». It is much more practical to have everything at your fingertips when applying makeup. However, we must also consider the presence of drawers, closets or adequate storage in the chosen room. The goal is to have a single place to group all makeup and daily care products. Finally, the room where you will sublimate must be bright enough to see you properly, but ventilated and not too hot for a good preservation of your equipment.

Make-up Storage Techniques

Here we are at the crucial moment of storing your products. For this, some techniques are to be implemented. On the one hand, you will have to organize your makeup by categories: lipstick/powder, blush and blush/eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara/, etc. You can choose resealable transparent boxes that will allow you to see the contents of the box without having to open it. For make-up utensils, there’s nothing like glass, wood or wicker jars.

Storing brushes in a pot

Your brushes, eyelash curlers and other materials will stand upright, so you can easily grab them if needed and even hang them up for space on your shelves. Finally, pay attention to the packaging of your nail polish which can be fatal to them and reduce their long-lasting properties. No need to keep all shades close. The ones you wear the most are enough. However, it is important to store them upright and in a cool place so that they do not perish too quickly.

You now know how to properly store your makeup. Even if it seems tedious at first glance, you will save some time after doing so. In addition, you will avoid keeping products that are useless or that can harm the most sensitive skins and will unclog your cabinets. Just one way to start the re-entry!
